One City One Pride Arts Festival

Facebook logo email icon thumb - instagram thumb - twitter #wehopride

ocopThanks for a wonderful 2013 One City One Pride Festival!

The City of West Hollywood celebrated Pride and the artistic contributions of the LGBT community with the One City One Pride queer arts festival. Held throughout late May and June, but centered on the dates of May 31-June 16, this festival comprised both free and ticketed events featuring theatre, film, music, spoken word, visual art, a parade, and much more! Poster 2013

2013's festival theme was ‘The Sacred and The Profane’, which explores the dichotomies of the LGBT experience: how the community views itself in contrast to how it is seen from the outside, a blending of the spiritual and the carnal, of things holy and wicked, and of things granted and taken away.

Check out these mini-interviews we did to find out more about the artists of One City One Pride, and their thoughts on how we celebrate pride.

In this special event held in the West Hollywood Council Chambers, gay men read from texts that were stolen or forbidden in their youth. This event was organized by local poet Steven Reigns and will feature readers including Clint Catalyst, Bernard Cooper, Jonny McGovern, and Bruce Vilanch. In a state that has legislated discrimination against the LGBT community, many risked loss of jobs, child custody, and family acceptance. This exhibit is funded by the City of West Hollywood through its Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission and by recommendation of the Gay and Lesbian Advisory Board. This exhibit will be on display through Wednesday, July 10, 2013 during regular operating hours at the West Hollywood Library. (M-Th 11-7, Fr-Sa 10-6). An artist's reception will happen on May 31. William Blake was arguably one of the world’s first straight allies. Though he himself was not gay, his poetry and art argued for freedom in love, and strongly influenced many artists and activists over the years. Similarly, the composers of new works based on William Blake’s poetry for Voices of LA are not gay, but supportive. One composer describes his piece as “A love song, looking towards the future with optimism. It is too true even today that, for some, ‘Love! sweet Love! [is] thought a crime’.” Partially funded by the City of West Hollywood through a grant from its Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission.

Check out some great photos of the exhibit here!
Presented as part of the One City One Pride Queer Arts Festival, this was the first full exhibition about the LGBT community to be shown at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute in Alabama, whose mission is to promote civil and human rights worldwide through education. The public display of the work marked photographer Carolyn Sherer’s “coming out” and that of a number of other participants. Meet the Artist: Carolyn Sherer
