The City of West Hollywood is continuously looking toward the future and is regularly working to explore ways of efficiently incorporating innovative technologies into infrastructure.
In 2016, the City adopted the Fiber Network Infrastructure and Service Strategic Plan. The plan outlined the major benefits of having a fast and affordable broadband infrastructure, including improved internet service, equitable access, public safety, economic development, healthcare, and Smart City applications, and set forth a plan to develop a series of initiatives that leverage technology and improve quality of life for community members.
Internet connectivity plays an important role in the daily lives of our community members and one area of technological innovation led by the City’s Information Technology Division is fiber-optic internet, which may be commonly referred to as fiber internet or just fiber. The City has begun development of a municipal fiber network and early phases of this fiber network are now complete. Now, as a next step, the City is exploring ways it might expand this fiber network for a growth phase of connectivity with the goal of providing community digital equity with affordable high-speed internet connectivity. To that end, the City has partnered with Plenary and Digital Ubiquity Capital in a collaborative Private-Public Partnership to explore expansion of the City’s fiber network.
As part of this exploring expanded fiber, the City and its partners on this effort are working with Millan Chicago to conduct community surveys of residents and businesses to better understand connectivity needs and challenges as they relate to broadband access options and future opportunities.
Surveys from Millan Chicago will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Data collected will be used to explore broadband access options and will not be sold. Residents and business community members are invited to share views. As part of the survey, participants will be asked about connection speed using a speed test link.
Thank you, in advance, for your participation. If you should have any questions or concerns, please reach out to the City of West Hollywood’s Information Technology Division at IT@weho.org.
