Focus of the Initiative
In August 2017, the City of West Hollywood City Council approved a Poverty Reduction Initiative to create innovative interventions for low-income residents in West Hollywood and evaluate the success of those interventions. The Poverty Reduction (PR) Initiative is designed to build upon and complement the City’s existing commitment and efforts to assist low-income residents: supporting a continuum of social services to provide vital resources; Aging in Place/Aging in Community Initiative to address the evolving needs of older adults; the Homeless Initiative to provide homelessness prevention and address the impacts of homelessness; protecting and enforcing a rent stabilization ordinance, offering inclusionary housing, and partnering with non-profit affordable housing developers to provide affordable housing in West Hollywood.
Priority Areas:
Approach to Identifying & Addressing Needs
The PR Initiative focuses on the gathering of local poverty data, researching best practices – globally and nationwide - in poverty reduction programs, identifying local collaborations that promote research and evidence-based programming, enrolling low-income residents in programs to provide personalized interventions, evaluating the program over time, and providing recommendations on future interventions. Since the PR Initiative began the City has collaborated with local partners to expand efforts to assist West Hollywood residents to complete CalFresh applications to help access federally funded nutrition assistance, provided more than 1.6 million dollars in rental assistance to address some of the financial hardships/impacts of COVID19, as well as launched the West Hollywood Pilot for Guaranteed Income for older adults living on a low income.
