June 2015 - December 2015

The City of West Hollywood through its Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission has sponsored a number of “One City One Pride Art Ops” on the LA Pride festival grounds including the “Modern Heroes” sculpture by Mauro Perucchetti.

Mauro Perucchetti brings together elements of Conceptual Art, Minimalism and Pop Art in an elegantly sculpted body of work made of resin, crystals, chrome and steel. Reliant on symbols to convey meaning, his attractive, light-hearted pieces deal out pointed political and social critique, subtly addressing some of the most pressing issues in contemporary society. Based in London, he has achieved international acclaim in recent years with a range of solo and group exhibitions across Europe and America.

“Modern Heroes,” (white fiberglass, replica of original marble sculpture, 6 x 6 x 2.5 feet), features pop art emulations of comic book-like icons of masculinity (based on the artist’s own visage).  They are positioned in a gesture referential to Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling.  It is an iconic example of Perucchetti’s commentary on the modern Western World, in this case a reflection of his belief in marriage equality. The artwork was previously exhibited in front of Le Louvre in Paris, France in 2013.

With “Michelangelo 2020: A Tribute to Women,” (white fiberglass, replica of original marble sculpture, 6.5 x 2.5 x 1.5 feet), Perucchetti reimagines Michelangelo’s classic David sculpture in female form.  As Los Angeles art critic Peter Frank has noted, “Perucchetti heroicizes woman by having her usurp man’s pedestal…The Tribute to Women assumes the original’s dynamic poise, conflating the subject of heroic action with the object of desire.” The piece was previously exhibited in 2011 at Casina Valadier in Borghese Park, Rome.

About Mauro Perucchetti: Mauro's work is a mixture of Minimalism and Pop, fused together with an elegance and an ironic wit that seem typical of a certain kind of Italian sensibility. Reliant on symbols to convey meaning, his attractive, light-hearted pieces deal out pointed political and social critique, subtly addressing some of the most pressing issues in contemporary society.
