Spheres, balls or orbs, they’re all around us: from atoms - nature’s building blocks - to the Earth and planets beyond. It’s no surprise that spheres have been the subjects of artists for centuries. McLean is drawn to the potential energy that a sphere radiates with its universal symbolism for completeness, unity, equality and acceptance. This exhibition of six spheres represents several years of the artist’s work as he experimented with various materials, sizes and colors.
Ivan McLean, born and raised in California, grew up the son of a Danish contractor / adventurer and Swedish mother / photographer. He developed a love for art and building things at a young age. During high school he picked up welding while working on a ranch near the family home in Point Reyes Station, CA. Ivan attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and received a BS in farm management, thinking that ranching would be his future. Enlisting in the Peace Corps led to a 2-year stint as an agricultural extension agent in Zamboanga City in the Southern Philippines. Following his service in the Peace Corps, Mclean went to live on a 700,000 acre sheep station on the Western edge of Australia. Upon returning to the States, Ivan began building fences and gates on a ranch in California, which led to furniture building and ultimately abstract expression through sculpture. Currently McLean lives with his wife and their three daughters in Portland, Oregon. His work is in numerous private and public collections and has been exhibited in galleries throughout the country.
