About One City One Pride

Each year, the City of West Hollywood celebrates Pride month through the artistic contributions of our community with the One City One Pride LGBTQ Arts Festival. For 2015, One City One Pride will run from Harvey Milk Day (May 22) through the end of June.

2015's festival theme: 'WeHo@30', Life@30'

In celebration of West Hollywood's 30th anniversary of Cityhood, One City One Pride takes a look at what it means to turn 30 with the theme 'WeHo@30, Life@30'.

When West Hollywood was founded 30 years ago, it was the first city in the nation with a predominantly LGBTQ City Council. As the LGBTQ community has become less marginalized, what does this mean for both the community and the City? A milestone year means a lot of things to different people, but it’s a great time to pause and reflect on where we've been and where we are headed, as individuals, as a City, and as a community.

WeHo@30: Art AIDS WeHo

As part of One City One Pride and the City’s 30th Anniversary, West Hollywood hosts a trio of exhibits on the impact of AIDS on art. Detailed info and pictures are available here.

 “Art AIDS America” is a comprehensive overview and consideration of 30 years of art made in response to the AIDS epidemic in the United States co-hosted in two neighboring locations. Photos of the exhibit and reception are available here. Art AIDS America is on view at two neighboring locations from June 5-September 6; overlapping visitor hours are Thursday from 4-7 pm, Friday and Saturday from 1-5 pm.

West Hollywood Library : On display through August 27 - 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard, West Hollywood. Library hours: Mondays through Thursdays, 11 am – 7 pm; Fridays and Saturdays, 10 am – 6 pm; closed on Sundays, holidays, and June 12-14.

“Dancers We Lost” is a commemorative public street banner and online history project which will be on view throughout West Hollywood featuring images of dancers lost to AIDS and other causes. 

 “Tongues Untied,” presented by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, (MOCA) at their Pacific Design Center location is an exhibition titled after the landmark film by poet, activist, and artist Marlon Riggs. MOCA PDC, 8687 Melrose Ave.; Hours: Tuesday through Friday, 11 am – 5 pm; Saturday – Sunday 11 am – 6pm; closed Mondays. Screening: “Nelly Queen: The Life and Times of José Julio Sarria”

On Harvey Milk Day, One City One Pride screens a work-in-progress assembly of a documentary that celebrates the legacy of José Julio Sarria, the first openly gay person to run for US public office, who many credit with helping pave the way for his friend Harvey Milk’s successful election several years later. This Latino pioneer who also founded the Imperial Court System has long been overlooked as a cornerstone of the LGBTQ rights movement.

The City of West Hollywood became the first city in the US to officially recognize Harvey Milk Day as a holiday this year. A reception will take place at this event with refreshments being served. Followed by a Q & A with the filmmakers and guests. Free admission, donations welcomed. Outfest WeHo Screening: “Larry Kramer In Love & Anger”

Part of the Outfest WeHo Screening series. From the onset of the AIDS epidemic, author Larry Kramer emerged as a fiery activist, co-founding GMHC and ACT-UP. As Kramer battles health complications stemming from years of fighting his own HIV diagnosis, filmmaker Jean Carlomusto weaves a rich tapestry from his countless media appearances and amateur activist footage, drawing viewers into an immediate experience of the frontline battle against AIDS, and forming a vibrant portrait of the still controversial figure. Opening Receptions for “WeHo@30: Art AIDS WeHo” 

As part of One City One Pride and the City’s 30th Anniversary, the City of West Hollywood holds a reception for “Art AIDS America”, a preview of a new national exhibition which is co-hosted at the West Hollywood Library and ONE Archives Museum & Gallery space, and launches the “Dancers We Lost” history and street banner project. The Art AIDS America reception is generously sponsored by Liberty Hill Foundation and Visit West Hollywood. The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA) hosts a simultaneous members’ opening for their new exhibit “Tongues Untied” at the Pacific Design Center in conjunction with both “Art AIDS WeHo” and the PDC’s quarterly “DesignLAb” opening.

A Day of Art & History, featuring Stuart Timmons’ LGBTQ History Tour, MOCA “Tongues Untied” Screening, and “Art, AIDS, America” and “Dancers We Lost” art talks.

June 6, A Day of Art and History. This is the official opening day for the ‘WeHo@30: Art AIDS WeHo’ exhibits with additional events and film screenings taking place in and around the West Hollywood Library.

11 am - 2 pm - Stuart Timmons, co-author of “Gay LA” suffered a stroke before his West Hollywood LGBTQ Mobile Tour was completed. Now thanks to a team of helper and a grant from the City of West Hollywood through One City One Pride, the tour will launch with a colorful cast of characters from different historical eras stationed along the route on this day from 11am-2pm.

3 pm – MOCA Screening of “Tongues Untied” and experimental video “Anthem’ by Marlon Riggs in conjunction with the new exhibit of the same name at MOCA PDC.

6 pm – Art Talk on “Art AIDS America” - Exhibition co-curator Jonathan D. Katz and exhibition artists Rudy Lemcke, Joey Terrill and Ann Meredith the thesis of the exhibition with moderator Tina Takemoto. Art talk sponsored by Liberty Hill Foundation.

7:30 pm – A presentation by historian Glenne McElhinney about a new street banner and historical research project called Dancers We Lost funded by a grant from the City of West Hollywood through its Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission.

8 pm – ‘LA: A Queer History’ Screening features 3 short film:  ‘Some of Your Best Friends’ (A look at the early LA  Gay Pride Movement featuring Don Kilhefner, Rev. Troy Perry & Morris Kight), ‘Nancy From East Side Clover’ (83 year old Butch Chicana Lesbian legend Nancy Valverde recounts her experiences being out in 1950's L.A.) and ‘L.A. A Queer History’ (a promo short for a documentary exploring the birth of gay liberation in LA).

From his early days as a Hollywood Producer with Mary Pickford to becoming the '60s radical Coffeehouse Priest', Malcolm’s story weaves through 91 years of activism. The Dyke March rally (7 pm) will march down Santa Monica Blvd from West Hollywood Park to San Vicente Blvd and return to the park where LA Pride will host a free Friday celebration of women with R&B artist Tamar Braxton on the main stage.

LA Pride Festival

LA Pride stage entertainment includes Kesha and Ana Barbara on June 13 and Fifth Harmony on June 14. The City of West Hollywood through its Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission has sponsored a number of “One City One Pride Art Ops” on the festival grounds including the “Modern Heroes” sculpture by Mauro Perucchetti and Mr. Brainwash's 'Life is Beautiful'. About Mauro Perucchetti: Mauro's work is a mixture of Minimalism and Pop, fused together with an elegance and an ironic wit that seem typical of a certain kind of Italian sensibility. Reliant on symbols to convey meaning, his attractive, light-hearted pieces deal out pointed political and social critique, subtly addressing some of the most pressing issues in contemporary society. Based in London, he has achieved international acclaim in recent years with a range of solo and group exhibitions across Europe and America.  

The sculpture titled “Modern Heroes” features pop art emulations of comic book-like icons of masculinity (based on the artists own visage). One icon stands while the other, in a reclined position, stretches out an admiring hand to touch Superman, the gesture a reference to Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling. The sculpture is characteristic of Perucchetti’s commentary of the modern Western World, in this case a reflection of his belief in marriage equality. The artwork was previously exhibited in front of Le Louvre in Paris, France in 2013.  The white fiberglass sculpture measures about 6 x 6 x 2.5 feet.  

Of course the largest community event happening during Pride is the LA Pride Parade and Festival produced by our community partner Christopher Street West on June 12, 13 and 14. One City One Pride is sponsoring art installations within the festival grounds that are visible for free to the public during the free day on Friday. For details visit www.lapride.org. Featuring the ALAP Playreading Festival, Yozmit (performance artist), Planet Queer and Apt 3F, and ReachLA. On June 27, One City One Pride hosts a full Day of Theatre that takes place in two venues in Plummer Park as well as interstitially throughout the park with the following programs:

2 pm - ALAP Gay & Lesbian Playreading Festival features readings of 6 short plays on the theme “Life at 30.”

3 pm - Performance artist Yozmit who performed with Marina Abramovic in MOMA's The Artist is Present will perform a meditational walk through the park wearing a specially custom-made outfit that incorporates red ribbon in remembrance of those who were lost to AIDS.

"West Hollywood, This Is Your Life!" (4pm-8:30pm)

4 pm - Hank Henderson's HomoCentric brings together diverse voices in LGBTQ writing.

4:30 pm - Jason Jenn's ReEvolutionary Productions' “Recognition = Life.” If "Silence = Death" then through the recognition of  the talents of those who were lost too early in the AIDS epidemic or by other causes, their contributions are honored with "Recognition=Life".

5:30 pm - “Flirty Thirty: The WeHo Queer History Project.” Under the guidance of performance activist Ian MacKinnon of Planet Queer, local performance artists will mine the rich 30-year history of West Hollywood's LGBTQ community for potent stories.

6:50 pm - APT 3F hosts a variety show with artists reflecting on the wild days of WeHo.

7:45 pm - REACH LA presents "Face Over 30: The Road To Ovahness" an original production based on the true stories of an African American gay young man's plight and journey from age 15 to 30 with elements of vogue runway dancing from 'ball' culture.

Memes

Curated by the 2015 Les Figues Kathy Acker Fellow, Margaret Rhee, and supported with a City Arts Grant awarded by the City of West Hollywood, Memes will convene former Los Angeles Queer Nationals to talk about the group’s historic use of slogans and stickers as a form of social protest and aesthetic intervention. Participating Los Angles Queer Nation activists and authors include: Michael du Plessis, Kathleen Chapman, and Judy Ornelas Sisneros. The panel discussion will be moderated by USC gender studies professor Karen Tongson.

Following the discussion, a participatory sticker-making workshop will engage and encourage brainstorming for the future of queer activism in Los Angeles. The event, hosted at the MAK Center Schindler House in West Hollywood, will focus on HIV/AIDS, art, literature, ephemera, protest, and Los Angeles LGBT history in order to honor queer activism and the diversity of protest expressions—underscoring queer history in our past, present, and future.

7/21. “Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature of Love” by Brad Fraser.

7/28. “A Language of Their Own” by Chey Yew.  

8/4. “Baltimore Waltz” by Paula Vogel.

8/11. An evening of monologues written by Michael Kearns along with the presentation of the Chuck Rowland Pioneer Award for achievements in LGBTQ Playwriting.
