The Legislative Affairs Team, in collaboration with the City’s Sacramento lobbyist, monitors federal and state legislation, and engages in advocacy efforts to advance the City’s interests in Sacramento and Washington, DC.  The goals and objectives of the Legislative Affairs Team are: a) to analyze legislative initiatives introduced in the State’s Legislature and Congress, and determine the impact these initiatives could have on local governments; b) to propose alternate solutions to proposed legislation and c) propose legislative actions to modify current statutes.  Staff prepares analyzes and advises the City Council on whether to adopt a position either in favor or against particular legislation, in accordance with the 2018 City Council adopted "advocacy and lobbying" plan.  In addition, the Legislative Affairs team works closely with statewide and national partners such as the League of California Cities and the National League of Cities to protect local control and self-determination of City’s policies and priorities.

The Legislative Affairs Team also works to maintain fluid communication with members of local governments as well as members of the State Legislature and Congress representing the City of West Hollywood. Currently, West Hollywood is represented on the California State Assembly by Assembly Member Rick Chavez Zbur and on the Senate by Senator Ben Allen. The City also works collaboratively with Congressman Adam Schiff, who represents the 28th Congressional District of California, which includes the City of West Hollywood. In addition, City staff maintains fluid communication with Senators Alex Padilla's and Laphonza Butler's district staff.
