The City of West Hollywood invites residential and commercial property owners and community members who are subject to the City’s mandatory Seismic Retrofit Ordinances to attend the upcoming West Hollywood Seismic Retrofit Resource Fair, a free event featuring design professionals and contractors specializing in seismic retrofit work.
The West Hollywood Seismic Retrofit Resource Fair will take place on Saturday, November 2, 2019 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Plummer Park’s Great Hall, located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard. The event is free and open to the public; no RSVP is needed. City of West Hollywood staff members and experts — such as structural engineers, contractors, and more — will be on-site to answer questions and offer technical knowledge.
The City of West Hollywood takes a proactive approach to seismic safety. While no building is absolutely earthquake-proof, retrofitting buildings will save lives, protect property, and minimize damage in the event of a major earthquake.
The Resource Fair will provide residential and commercial property owners with a range of information and resources for seismic retrofitting in order to comply with to mandatory strengthening requirements for certain types of existing buildings under the City of West Hollywood’s seismic retrofit Ordinances.
In 2017, the West Hollywood City Council formally adopted two Ordinances establishing a framework for the seismic retrofit of three types of existing buildings: wood-frame buildings with soft, weak, or open front wall lines; non-ductile concrete building; and, pre-Northridge steel moment frame buildings. In April 2018, the City uploaded, to its online open data portal, a visual survey of properties subject to the Ordinances. Property owners will be required to demonstrate that their buildings are in compliance with the Ordinances or will be required to seismic retrofit their buildings.
