Women and Books was founded to offer women a way to connect with other women. The book club meets monthly to discuss books written by women authors. The subject of this month’s discussion is the book Shining Sea by Anne Korkeakivi, who will be present to join in the discussion.

This month’s meeting will take place on Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at 7 p.m. at the West Hollywood Library Community Meeting Room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard.

Be Well WeHo Presents Mindfulness Workshop, October 4

The City of West Hollywood’s Recreation Services Division Be Well WeHo series of programming presents a workshop on Mindfulness on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Plummer Park Community Center, located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard in rooms 5 and 6, or from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the West Hollywood Library Community Meeting Room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard.

The art of mindfulness is the art of living in the “here and now.” During the class, participants will learn how to use physiological signs as tools to live each moment mindfully, and techniques to become aware of one’s abilities to create a meaningful and joyful life.

Outfest West Hollywood Series Presents Latinx Shorts Retrospective: Made in LA , October 4

Outfest, with the support of the City of West Hollywood through its WeHo Arts program, and in conjunction with the City’s special thematinc WeHo Artes programing in celebration of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, will present Latinx Shorts Retrospective: Made in LA on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. at the City of West Hollywood’s Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard.

Latinx Shorts Retrospective: Made in LA is a collection of short films from the Outfest archives showcasing the queer Latinx diaspora.

“Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA” is an exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles, and will take place through January 2018 across Southern California.

Tickets are $10. No one under 18 will be admitted.

The West Hollywood Library will host a Classic Movie Matinee featuring the film Psycho on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at 2 p.m. at the West Hollywood Library Community Meeting Room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard.

WeHo Reads Celebrates the 6th Anniversary of the West Hollywood Library with Heidi Duckler Dance Theater Dress Performance, October 6

The City of West Hollywood’s WeHo Arts program, the West Hollywood Library, the Friends of the West Hollywood Library, and Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre celebrate the 6th anniversary of the opening of the West Hollywood Library with a free dress performance of Back in Circulation on Friday, October 6, 2017 at 7 p.m. at the West Hollywood Library, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard.

Built by the City of West Hollywood and opened six years ago in October 2011, the West Hollywood Library is among the most impressive pieces of public architecture in Southern California. Heidi Duckler’s choreography will focus on the vast windows of the library as symbolic thresholds for sharing information, as well as containers of public space. No single site or landmark in American culture is more synonymous with “information” than the public library. In Back in Circulation, Duckler activates the West Hollywood site to explore contemporary questions of knowledge and understanding through movement.

CalArts WHAP! Lecture Series Presents Flicker Time: Liquid Bodies and Cosmic States, October 6

The CalArts West Hollywood Aesthetics and Politics (WHAP!) lecture series, which is supported by the City of West Hollywood’s WeHo Arts program, examines Flicker Time: Liquid Bodies and Cosmic States on Friday, October 6, 2017 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the West Hollywood Library Community Meeting Room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard.

Drawing upon extensive experience as a curator, critical thinker and practitioner, Bridget Crone will address questions of contemporary art and critical philosophy as they are manifest in art processes today, and also in terms of challenging spaces of reception and the insitutional and political contexts for current exhibitions.

Thrive Tribe Foundation’s U=U Prevention Access Campaign Seminar, October 6

Thrive Tribe Foundation presents a U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable) Prevention Access Campaign seminar on Friday, October 6, 2017 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the City of West Hollywood’s Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard.

The seminar will focus on advances in the science of HIV medication, and new data from the medical community that shows that individuals with undetectable viral loads, who are adherent to their medications, are not at risk of transmitting HIV.

CMG Short Film Festival 2017, October 7 and 8

California Men’s Gatherings (CMG), with the support of the City of West Hollywood’s WeHo Arts program, presents the CMG Short Film Festival 2017, featuring four programs of short films screening on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at 5 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., and on Sunday, October 8, 2017 at 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the City of West Hollywood’s Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard.

SASSAS soundSpark Music Series for Young Children will Feature Joanna Wallfisch, October 7

soundSpark is a monthly music series for young children featuring solo and duo performances by emerging artists. This month’s soundSpark performer will be vocalist, composer and multi-instrumentalist Joanna Wallfisch.

The performance will take place on Saturday, October 7, 2017 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the West Hollywood Library Children’s Theatre, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard.

soundSpark is made possible through a grant from the City of West Hollywood through its WeHo Arts program and is organized by SASSAS (The Society for the Activation of Social Space through Art and Sound).

The City of West Hollywood’s WeHo Reads series and Book Soup present Armistead Maupin discussing and signing Logical Family: A Memoir, on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the West Hollywood Library Community Meeting Room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard.

HIV Zero Strategic Plan Pop-Ups, October 11 and 18

The City of West Hollywood’s Social Services Division staff will host two “Pop-Up” events in October as part of the development of Phase II of the City’s HIV Zero Strategic Plan. The Pop-Ups will be held on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the West Hollywood Library, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard, and on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. adjacent to Starbucks, located at 8595 Santa Monica Boulevard.

Community members are invited to stop by to offer input about the stigmas associated with HIV. There will be free giveaways for those who complete surveys.

Parents Education League Workshop on LAUSD Magnet School Application and Admissions, October 11

The City of West Hollywood will hosts the Parents Education League (PEL) Workshop on LAUSD Magnet School Application and Admissions on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the West Hollywood Library Community Meeting Room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard.

There are currently 225 Magnet Programs in the LAUSD which are open to families who live in the City of West Hollywood. This workshop will be presented by Keith Abrahams, executive director of LAUSD’s Student Integration Services, and will provide information about the programs available, the application process, timelines, and criteria.

Opera Gala, October 14

Disabilities Awareness Month Health and Wellness Event, October 17

In recognition of Disabilities Awareness Month, the City of West Hollywood will join its Disabilities Advisory Board and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in hosting a free Health and Wellness Event on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the West Hollywood Community Center at Plummer Park, located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard.

The event will emphasize preventative health care. Free health screenings will be provided for hearing, podiatry, pulmonary lung function, blood glucose, blood pressure. and total cholesterol. Additionally, flu immunizations will be offered, as well as HIV testing.

This year’s event will include free breast cancer screenings provided by Alinea Medical Imaging. This free service will be provided for women who are 40 years of age or older, have no breast symptoms, are low income, and are uninsured or under-insured. Screenings are available by appointment only.

Prepare for an Earthquake with the Great California ShakeOut, October 19

The City of West Hollywood encourages residents, businesses, and visitors to participate in the Great California ShakeOut, an earthquake drill and preparedness activity, on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at 10:19 a.m.

Participating is a great way for your family or organization to be prepared to survive and recover quickly from an earthquake. Earthquakes are an inevitable reality in California, and community members should make plans to ensure that a natural disaster doesn’t become a catastrophe.

The Great Shakeout began in California in 2008. Since then, it has grown to include millions of people who will practice how to Drop, Cover, and Hold-on during Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills all over the world.

A Conversation with Frances Taylor Davis, West Hollywood’s Original Diva, October 21

The City of West Hollywood hosts artist and icon Frances Taylor Davis, in conversation with fellow West Hollywood resident Tripp Mahan, Senior Vice President of Global Experiences for Beautycon Media, on Saturday, October 21, 2017 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the City of West Hollywood’s City Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room at West Hollywood Library, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard.

Davis studied dance with the famed Katherine Dunham and became the first black ballerina to dance with the Paris Opera Ballet. In 1958, she married one of the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music, Miles Davis. When the marriage ended, Davis became the hostess at the famed Roy’s Restaurant, where she became known as “the Diva.” She will share stories of adventures and encounters of her career, including her time as the “hostess with the mostess” at Le Dome, Chasen’s, and the Sunset Strip Hamburger Hamlet.

City of West Hollywood will Host 19th Annual Disability Service Awards, October 25

The City of West Hollywood will host its 19th Annual Disability Service Awards on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at 6 p.m. at the City of West Hollywood’s City Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room at West Hollywood Library, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard. A reception will take place at 5 p.m., prior to the meeting

The Disability Service Awards honor individuals, businesses, and nonprofit organizations for their work with people living with disabilities. The event will feature an awards presentation. This year’s Disability Service Award recipients are:

· Maria Shriver – Individual Award;

· MV Transportation – Business Award;

· Gold Pictures – Media Award; and

· Braille Institute – Nonprofit Award.

The theme of the event is “healthcare” and the evening will include presentations about legislative and advocacy efforts to improve healthcare access. Presenters will include Elan Shultz, Senior Health Deputy, Office of Supervisor Sheila Kuehl; Aaron Fox, Director of Government Relations, Los Angeles LGBT Center; and Hillary Selvin, Executive Director, National Council of Jewish Women Los Angeles.

WeHo Pedals Bike Share Basics Class, October 26

The City of West Hollywood will host a mid-day WeHo Pedals bike share education class, Bike Share Basics, on Thursday, October 26, 2017 from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the WeHo Pedals bike share hub at Plummer Park, located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard.

The class will offer a hands-on experience that aims to educate and encourage community members to use the WeHo Pedals system as informed, safe, and lawful cyclists. Two instructors, designated by Sustainable Streets, will lead the class in practicing safe riding skills and learning how to use all of the features of a WeHo Pedals bike share bicycle. Participants will also learn West Hollywood’s local bicycle laws. The workshop will include a group ride on WeHo Pedals bikes starting and ending in Plummer Park.

Participation in the class is free and space is limited to 15 participants. All participants will receive a free helmet. Unfortunately, walk-up participants cannot be accommodated.

Lee, Pattern Recognition c. 1947, on Friday, October 27, 2017 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the City of West Hollywood’s City Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room at West Hollywood Library, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard.

The City of West Hollywood’s WeHo Arts program and the West Hollywood Library present Drag Queen Storytime on Saturday, October 28, 2017 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the West Hollywood Library Community Meeting Room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard.

Youth Halloween Carnival, October 28

By orders of the Queen of Hearts, children in the community are summoned to the City of West Hollywood’s Youth Halloween Carnival to delight in wonders wild and new, where dreams are twined and will come true.

This year’s annual event, with an “Alice in Wonderland” theme, will take place on Saturday, October 28, 2017 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Plummer Park, located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard, on the Vista Lawn.

This curious day will feature face painting, game booths, and costume contests. Don’t be late for this very important date.

Classical Theatre Lab’s Staged Reading of Hay Fever, October 28

The City of West Hollywood’s WeHo Arts program presents Classical Theatre Lab’s staged reading of Noel Coward’s brilliant comedy, Hay Fever, as part of the City’s Free Theatre in the Parks program on Saturday, October 28, 2017 from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the West Hollywood Library Community Meeting Room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard.

Directed by Elizabeth Swain, the play takes place at a country house in England, where a retired stage actress, her husband, and their two nearly grown children are set for a June weekend of fun and extreme self-indulgence in sort of a Midsummer Night’s Dream for the modern era.

West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval, October 31

This year’s West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval will take place on Tuesday, October 31, 2017 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Santa Monica Boulevard between Doheny Drive and La Cienega Boulevard.

Each year, the City of West Hollywood hosts its Halloween Carnaval, one of the most unique Halloween gatherings in the world. Staged over a one-mile stretch of Santa Monica Boulevard/Historic Route 66, the Halloween Carnaval will feature exceptional music and incredible people-watching for a one-of-a-kind festival. This event is open for all to enjoy, but children and pets are not recommended.

Halloween Carnaval was launched in 1987 and is rooted in the foundation of the City of West Hollywood’s diverse culture and community. The event has grown year-by-year into an annual gathering of phenomenal costumes, entertainment, culture, and self-expression with a myriad of observers, revelers, exhibitionists, and performers. People come from all over the region and even travel from domestic and international spots to take part in the fun.

The PickUp and CityLineX will Offer Special Service on Halloween, October 31

The City of West Hollywood will offer Halloween Carnaval-goers three free transit options to get to and from the event on Tuesday, October 31, 2017:

1. CityLineX (Modified Service) – will run from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. from Hollywood and Highland to Santa Monica Boulevard/ Sweetzer Avenue;

2. Hollywood Link (Special CityLineX Service to and from La Brea Only) – will run from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. to and from Hollywood and Highland to Santa Monica Boulevard/La Brea Avenue, where riders may connect to The PickUp’s Special Service; and

3. The PickUp (Special Service) – will run from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. along Santa Monica Boulevard and will stop at all regular eastbound stops between Sweetzer Avenue/La Brea Avenue. Once the PickUp reaches its La Brea Avenue stop, it will take an express route west toward the Halloween Carnaval via Melrose Avenue to its special Halloween stop on King Road/ Santa Monica Boulevard. From 11 p.m. to 3 a.m., The PickUp will only run eastbound from Kings Road/ Santa Monica Boulevard to La Brea Avenue/Santa Monica Boulevard.

Join Team West Hollywood for the United Way’s HomeWalk

The City of West Hollywood will participate in the United Way’s 11th annual HomeWalk, an event that raises funds and awareness with the ultimate goal of ending homelessness in Los Angeles County.

The event will take place during the morning of Saturday, November 18, 2017, in Grand Park, located near Los Angeles City Hall at 200 N. Grand Avenue, in Downtown Los Angeles.

The City of West Hollywood is currently forming its team and beginning fundraising efforts. Community members and their friends and family are invited to join the City’s team by registering at bit.ly/2h48c0S. The first 100 participants will receive a team T-shirt. People who can’t participate but who would like to donate may do so using the same website link.
