Your Voice Matters — Vote! West Hollywood’s Next Election is June 2
Register to Vote by May 18
The City of West Hollywood’s Special Municipal Election will be held on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 to fill one seat on the West Hollywood City Council.
Help us spread the word! West Hollywood residents who are not already registered to vote must register by Monday, May 18, 2015 to participate in the election. You should re-register if you have moved, if you have had a change in marital status, or if it has been awhile since you registered. Remember that Provisional and Vote-by-Mail ballots are verified using your signature — so update your voter registration to ensure that your vote counts.
Register online — There is a link to register to vote on the City’s website at www.weho.org/elections which will take you to the California Secretary of State’s Voter Registration page to register online.
Vote by Mail — The Vote by Mail period begins on Monday, May 4, 2015 and ends Tuesday, May 26, 2015; Vote by Mail ballots will be mailed directly to individuals who complete the application at www.weho.org/elections.
Find your polling place — If you prefer to vote on Election Day, June 2, find your polling place at www.lavote.net/locator.

WeHo@30: Young City, Vibrant Heritage — A Photographic Exhibition of Historically Designated Resources in West Hollywood, Through May 15
As part of the 30th Anniversary of Cityhood, the City of West Hollywood presents a photographic exhibition of historically designated resources in West Hollywood. To date, the City has designated a total of 83 historic and cultural resources throughout the City. This exhibit features a selection of such buildings, photographed by Tony Coehlo.
WeHo@30: Young City, Vibrant Heritage is on-display at West Hollywood Library, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard. It runs through Friday, May 15, 2015. Admission is free and is open to the public.

New Cityline Schedule Changes will Take Effect on May 1
Cityline is the City of West Hollywood’s free shuttle service available to the general public, which offers a friendly alternative to larger modes of public transit. On Friday, May 1, 2015, new Cityline schedule changes will take effect. These changes were made to improve efficiency and schedule reliability.
Details will be available on the City’s website at www.weho.org/cityline. Copies of updated timetables will also be available at West Hollywood City Hall, the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, West Hollywood Library, and Plummer Park.
Cityline operates Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Real-time Cityline arrival information can also be viewed at www.nextbus.com.

9th Annual Women’s Leadership Conference, May 1 to May 3
This year’s West Hollywood Women’s Leadership Conference will kick-off on Friday, May 1, 2015 and will continue with a weekend of events, panels, and workshops through Sunday, May 3, 2015 at locations throughout the West Hollywood Library.
On Friday, May 1, 2015, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., the conference will begin with a Power Networking Breakfast at the City of West Hollywood’s Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room at West Hollywood Library, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard. There is a suggested $10 donation — or of new or used handbags to benefit Dress for Success Worldwide-West.
The conference Kick-Off Event will take place on Friday, May 1, 2015 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Pacific Design Center’s Silver Screen Theatre, located at 8687 Melrose Avenue. The evening event will feature special guest speakers such as Sandra Fluke, Attorney and Women’s Rights Advocate, and an exclusive screening of The Hunting Ground. The event is free.
On Saturday, May 2, 2015, the conference will run from 9 a.m. to
5 p.m. at locations throughout the West Hollywood Library and Park Complex, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard. There will be dynamic speakers, informative panels, valuable resources, expert-led trainings, and an exhibitor area. General conference tickets range from $35 to $45 with advance registration; tickets will be $55 on the day of the conference. Tickets for seniors and full-time students are $15. Ticket prices include meals.
On Sunday, May 3, 2015, the Conference Finale will run from 1 p.m. to
6 p.m. at the City of West Hollywood’s Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room at West Hollywood Library, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard. There will be an inspiring program celebrating the advancement and achievements of women.

SEEfest 2015: 10th Annual Festival of Films from Southeast Europe, May 1 to May 7
SEEfest 2015 will screen 45 films from more than 15 countries across Southeast Europe. There will be comedies and romances, and the themes will cover diverse topics, demographics and ages, including WWI, young rebels turned entrepreneurs, spunky seniors — even fencing champions.
Everyone is welcome to attend. West Hollywood residents will enjoy discounted tickets to all shows and may attend screenings within West Hollywood free of charge. General admission is $10. Admission for students, seniors, West Hollywood residents, and Friends of the Goethe is $5. The Shorts program is free.
West Hollywood artists and filmmakers are also invited to attend the Business of Film Conference on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at 9 a.m. at the Goethe-Institut free-of-charge, followed by a networking brunch.

National Travel and Tourism Week and National Small Business Week, May 2 to May 10
The City of West Hollywood, the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, Visit West Hollywood, the West Hollywood Design District, and the Sunset Strip Business Association are working together to get the word out about two exciting nationwide events in May, which will locally celebrate West Hollywood as a travel destination and support the City’s small business community.
National Travel and Tourism Week takes place from Saturday, May 2, 2015 to Sunday, May 10, 2015. Tourists from all over the globe visit West Hollywood for its iconic destinations such as The Sunset Strip and historic Route 66 and this nationwide week of recognition serves to champion a wide cross section of travel and tourism professionals.
National Small Business Week takes place from Monday, May 4, 2015 to Friday, May 8, 2015. More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business. The City of West Hollywood’s Arts & Economic Development Division creates and manages a range of programs that support and develop a vibrant local economy, including supporting small businesses.

Russian Arts and Culture Week Kick-Off: Bike & Bites – Russian/WeHo Edition, May 2
The best of two worlds — food and fitness. Add-in a rich Russian culinary culture and toss them together and you have Bikes & Bites: Russian/WeHo Edition. This excursion is presented in both Russian and English and the best part is that it is guilt-free — burn calories and cycle to different areas of the city to sample the most delicious delicacies West Hollywood has to offer.
Bikes & Bites: Russian/WeHo Edition will take place on Saturday, May 2, 2015; check-in is at 10:30 a.m. and departure is at 11 a.m. The meeting spot is at Bikes and Hikes, located at 8743 Santa Monica Boulevard. On this adventure, participants will pedal along landmarks of West Hollywood and to places that represent the Russian community. West Hollywood’s top Russian chefs will be preparing special bites for the group to sample. The tour is free for the first 25 people (special thanks to Bikes and Hikes).

SASSAS soundSpark Music Series for Young Children Features Nicholas Deyoe, May 2

The Wizard of Oz — Presented in Russian and English, May 2
The L.A. Puppet Theater Tree of Wonders presents The Wizard of Oz performed with handmade puppets and hand painted backdrops. Meet a little girl named Ellie (in the English version, she is Dorothy) who wants to get home, a Scarecrow who needs a brain, a Tin Man who wants a heart, and a cowardly Lion who desperately needs courage. The Wizard of Oz is a beautiful fairytale about good and evil, friendship and magic, and the extraordinary adventures of ordinary characters. Admission is free.

Russian Arts and Culture Festival, May 3
The Russian Arts and Culture Festival is a day of family-friendly events celebrating the rich culture and heritage of the over 500,000 members of the Los Angeles region’s Russian speaking community. The Festival is free to the public and will include a day of entertainment, music, food vendors, Russian crafts and jewelry, and numerous local exhibitors.
The Festival will take place on Sunday, May 3, 2015 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Plummer Park, located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard. Admission is free. There will be Puppet Theater on Wheels at 11 a.m.; a Grand Opening Ceremony at 11:30 a.m.; the Annual Children’s Concert from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.; and an Annual Gala Concert from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Film Screening: The Desert of Forbidden Art, May 5
How does art survive in a time of oppression? During the Soviet rule, artists who stayed true to their vision were executed, sent to mental hospitals, or sent to Gulags. In The Desert of Forbidden Art young Igor Savitsky is inspired. He pretends to buy state-approved art but, instead, he daringly rescues 40,000 forbidden fellow artists’ works and creates a museum in the desert of Uzbekistan, far from the watchful eyes of the KGB.
A screening of The Desert of Forbidden Art will take place as part of Russian Arts and Culture Week. 10th Annual Russian Community Awards Presentation, May 5
The Russian Advisory Board of the City of West Hollywood has established three awards to recognize individuals, businesses, and organizations that have had a positive impact and bettered the lives of members of the Russian-speaking community in West Hollywood and the Los Angeles region.
The awards will be presented at an official ceremony on Tuesday, May 5, 2015, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the City of West Hollywood’s Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard. Free validated parking is available in the five-story parking structure.

The PickUp Celebrates Cinco de Mayo with Special Service, May 5
On Tuesday, May 5, 2015, from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m., The PickUp, West Hollywood’s Free Nighttime Ride, will celebrate Cinco de Mayo. The special holiday service is part of a recently implemented plan to expand PickUp service to include popular nightlife holidays.
The PickUp offers a safe and convenient way to get to a destination in the City of West Hollywood on Fridays and Saturdays (and popular nightlife holidays!) from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. The PickUp is free (and fun!). It travels along Santa Monica Boulevard in a four-mile loop with 10 stops in each direction between Robertson Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue. It arrives at stops every 15 minutes and the music thumps to beat mixes by DJ Derek Monteiro.

Flaviyake is an electro pop singer and songwriter. Her name is a hybrid of her Latin name Flavia (meaning ‘golden, blonde’) and Japanese fashion designer Issey Miyake, who became her favorite designer after she attended his exhibition at the Barbican Centre in London in 2010.
Inspired by America is an event presented in both Russian and English. It will bring diverse cultures together through the power of music. ‘Aging in Place’ Human Services Commission Special Meeting, May 9
The City of West Hollywood is developing a strategic plan on Aging in Place to help the City evolve as a place where aging is embraced, and where people can remain in the housing of their choice as long as possible. Community members are invited to participate in a special meeting on Saturday, May 9, 2015, to share their ideas and discuss ways the City can accomplish these goals.
The plan will build on existing policies and programs, such as arts and cultural events, developing “lifespan-friendly” housing, senior services, and approaches to wellness.
The meeting will take place on Saturday, May 9, 2015 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the West Hollywood Park Auditorium, 647 N. San Vicente Boulevard. Lost in Lvov, May 9
Lost in Lvov brings to life several generations of an educated Jewish family as it transitions from the former Soviet Union (Lvov, Ukraine) to a new life in America. A biographical, multimedia storytelling experience, Lost in Lvov opens a time capsule of memories, secrets and precious experiences of the Belman sisters, three sisters who immigrate to America from the U.S.S.R.
Lost in Lvov will take place on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at 3 p.m. and at 6 p.m. at the City of West Hollywood’s Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard. Documentary Film Screening I’ll Be Me, May 11
I’ll Be Me is a documentary film from 2014, which follows legendary musician Glen Campbell on his farewell tour after he is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, as he and his family navigate the unpredictable nature of the disease through love, laughter, and music.
The screening will take place on Monday, May 11, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. at the City of West Hollywood’s City Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room at West Hollywood Library, located at 625 N. The City of West Hollywood’s 2015 Rent Stabilization Ordinance (RSO) Building Blocks Seminar Series will host a discussion: Landlord Basics 101. Learn the basics of the RSO, including what you are entitled to once you have re-registered a unit, penalties for failure to re-register, and how to avoid rent reductions and overcharges. Bike to Work Day, May 14
May is National Bike Month and the City of West Hollywood is celebrating the benefits of bicycling by encouraging community members to leave their cars at home and hop on a bicycle to get to work.
On Thursday, May 14, 2015, the City will host a bicycle pit stop from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the sidewalk plaza at 8743 Santa Monica Boulevard, just east of the intersection of Santa Monica and Hancock Drive. It will provide a festive spot for cyclists to gather, enjoy coffee, rehydrate, and refuel with a snack on the way to work.
Bike to Work Day is a collaboration of the City of West Hollywood, the West Hollywood Bicycle Coalition, AIDS/LifeCycle, and Bikes & Hikes.

Opera Talk: A Streetcar Named Desire, May 16
Please join us as opera aficionado Louis Bernstein offers his insights in a comparison of the opera, A Streetcar Named Desire, composed by Andre Previn, with the movie and play of the same title by Tennessee Williams. Celebration Theatre New Works Series: After And Before, May 19
The monthly Celebration Theatre New Works Series presents a staged reading of After And Before by Eric Loo. After And Before is a story about a priest who becomes disillusioned with the Catholic Church after 20 years and decides to leave the priesthood. “Time Presses” Wednesday-Night Recreation/Social Club, May 20
The City of West Hollywood and its Russian Advisory Board will co-sponsor the Recreation Club “Time Presses” — a Wednesday-Night Social Club on Wednesday, May 20, 2015, from 6 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. The event will take place at the West Hollywood Community Center at Plummer Park, located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard, in Rooms 1 and 2.
The evening will feature karaoke singing, movies, potluck food, and an opportunity to communicate in Russian and English languages. There will be a special presentation by the members and an open microphone. Admission is free.

West Hollywood’s Gay Men’s Discussion Group “TRIBE,” May 20
The City of West Hollywood’s Gay Men’s Discussion Group TRIBE meets on the third Wednesday of every month. TRIBE discussions are open to the public and attendees are encouraged to discuss their own experiences about issues of importance to the gay male community.
This month, TRIBE will be discussing “Shirts and Skins — Sexual Subcultures and Ways to Be Gay.” Our community consists of a wide variety of diverse sexual subcultures. From hipsters and gender-benders, to twinks and bears, to leathermen and puppies — and every color of the rainbow in between, there are so many different ways to be gay. Which subcultures do you identify with? Which do you not really understand? How many different kinds of gay are you?

Harvey Milk Day Screening — Nelly Queen: The Life and Times of José Julio Sarria, May 22
Presented on Harvey Milk Day as part of the One City One Pride LGBTQ Arts Festival, this screening of a work-in-progress assembly of an upcoming documentary, Nelly Queen: The Life and Times of José Julio Sarria, celebrates the life of José Julio Sarria who was a friend and supporter of Harvey Milk, and helped pave the way for Harvey Milk’s run for Board of Supervisors in San Francisco.
The screening will take place on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 7 p.m. at the City of West Hollywood’s Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard. “Time Presses” Skyline Campground Trip, May 22 to May 25
The Recreation Club “Time Presses” is organizing a Memorial Day weekend outdoor escape to the Skyline Campground in the San Bernardino Mountains. The Skyline Campground is a great place to enjoy an extended family or large group camping experience. It is close to a variety of wilderness trails and offers abundant fishing opportunities within the surrounding mountain creeks.
The Time Presses Skyline Campground escape will take place from Friday, May 22, 2015 to Monday, May 25, 2015. The Skyline Campground is located in the Heart Bar Campground complex on Forest Route IN02, off of Highway 38.

Gelson’s supermarket will host a free E-waste collection event at its West Hollywood location as a means of benefiting local residents and the environment. It’s a quick and easy way to dispose of electronic waste. The following items will be accepted: televisions, monitors, computers, printers, phones, and household electronic items.

On Memorial Day Holiday, There Will Be No Trash Pickup in West Hollywood, May 25
The City of West Hollywood’s waste hauler, Athens Services, will have no trash pickup on the Memorial Day holiday, Monday, May 25, 2015. Trash collection services will resume on Tuesday, May 26, 2015 and customers throughout West Hollywood can expect to have their trash collected one day later than their regularly scheduled pickup day.
