U.S. Representative Henry Waxman, who represents the 30th Congressional District that includes West Hollywood, will be the keynote speaker at the 11th Annual Russian Style Festival’s Community Awards Presentation on Sunday, May 20, 2012 at 4:45 p.m. on the main stage in front of Fiesta Hall at Plummer Park, 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard. Congressman Waxman will also be honored for his years of service and championing the many causes of West Hollywood. His speech will be in English, but will be translated into Russian for the benefit of the Russian-speaking audience.
“Congressman Henry Waxman has been an incredible champion for better health care in this country,” said West Hollywood Councilmember John Heilman. “When almost no one in Washington cared about HIV and AIDS, Henry was working hard to secure funding for treatment, housing and medical research. Henry led the effort to pass the Ryan White Act and to prohibit discrimination against people with AIDS. He has been a real champion,” continued Councilmember Heilman.
“I am delighted to join you today at the Russian Style Cultural Festival to celebrate the rich traditions of one of the largest Russian-speaking populations in the United States,” said Congressman Henry Waxman. “It has been my distinct pleasure to represent the City of West Hollywood in Congress for many years and to have developed strong friendships within your community. I am grateful for the generous award being presented to me by the city today and look forward to the Festival,” continued Congressman Waxman.
Other honorees at the Community Awards event include the Los Angeles Association of Veterans of World War II, who will be honored with the Outstanding Community Service Award. The Role Model of the Year Award will be given to Lika Osipova and Sasha Rider, and the Outstanding Achievement Award will be given to Lev Volovik. Entertainment will be provided by the Russian Comedy Club L.A. The Festival will conclude with the Russian Style Festival’s Annual Gala Concert, which will also take place on the main stage, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Entertainment, music, food and family activities will be a part of the 11th Annual Russian Style Festival, presented by the City of West Hollywood and its Russian Advisory Board. Other events celebrating Russian arts and culture will also take place around the City beginning on Friday, May 18, 2012. This event is a chance for not only City of West Hollywood residents, but those living in the greater Los Angeles area, to enjoy the rich cultural and ethnic flavor of this vibrant community.
