City To Host "Tendrils" Musical Performance

Post Date:January 30, 2012

The City of West Hollywood will host Tendrils, a special musical performance by Pacific Serenades for their 26th concert season performance on Wednesday, February 1, 2012 starting at 8 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the West Hollywood Library, 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard in West Hollywood. Pacific Serenades is one of the nation’s foremost chamber music ensembles. The concert series, titled Tendrils, will feature a program that showcases an interesting combination of chamber works, past and present.

In addition, the performance will feature the world premiere of Laura Karpman’s Different Lanes for string quartet and iPad. The new piece will be played alongside Beethoven's String Quartet in D major, Op. 18, No. 3; and Ravel's Sonata for Violin & Cello. Different Lanes is the 103rd commissioned and premiered work of Pacific Serenades, written by prolific four-time Emmy winning composer, and out-lesbian, Laura Karpman.

Musicians to perform include violinists Movses Pogossian and Connie Kupka; Brian Dembow on viola, and David Speltz on cello.

Los Angeles native Laura Karpman is one of the few female composers with an active career in film and television, and has received a GANG award and nomination in video game music for her work composing music for Everquest II. Karpman received her Doctorate in Musical Arts in Composition from The Juilliard School.

Since it’s founding in 1982 by flutist/composer Mark Carlson, Pacific Serenades has become one of the foremost chamber music organizations in the nation and one of the longest performing on the west coast. For twenty-six seasons, the model of playing new works alongside standard repertoire has served to encourage an experience both visceral and intellectual—the conversation between old and new resulting in a deeper understanding of chamber music as a truly living art.

In addition to the regular programming of the season, Pacific Serenades will give a free concert on June 1st, during One City / One Pride, the West Hollywood Pride Festival. Musicologist Byron Adams will conduct a lecture on what it is to be a gay composer working in Southern California.

Concert tickets are $34 and can be purchased online at www.pacser.org or to purchase by phone, call (213) 534-3434. Student tickets can be purchased same day at the door for $5. School ID is necessary. A limited number of free tickets are available to low-income, elderly, or those in need by e-mailing Mike Che at mche@weho.org
