The City of West Hollywood will, for the fourth year in a row, join the biggest mass action to end violence against women and girls in human history. One Billion Rising is a global campaign that is leading the charge to end violence against women and girls, and to take a stand against gender inequality. The campaign, launched on Valentine’s Day 2012 by award-winning playwright and activist Eve Ensler, author of the world-famous play The Vagina Monologues, began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. Throughout the world women, men, and youth will plan, lead, and participate in actions, dancing, political and artistic events, and rallies — or Risings — in hundreds of countries on and around February 14.
In recognition of the 18th anniversary of V-Day, the West Hollywood One Billion Rising for Revolution event will be a grass-roots community rally on Saturday, February 13, 2016 from 11 a.m. to 12 noon. at the Sal Guarriello Veterans' Memorial, at the intersection of Holloway Drive and Santa Monica Boulevard. The West Hollywood event will feature guest speakers including members of the West Hollywood City Council as well as local activists affiliated with the One Billion Rising Campaign. The event will culminate with a mass dance action of the official One Billion Rising “Break the Chain” dance choreographed by three-time Emmy Award-winner Debbie Allen.
