The “Gifts for Guns” program provides an opportunity for residents to safely and anonymously surrender any firearm to the Sheriff’s Department in exchange for a gift card ($400 for assault weapons; $100 for a handgun, rifle, or shotgun; and $50 for a non-operational firearm) redeemable at Target or Ralphs markets. Participants will be directed to checkpoints where the firearms will be located, inventoried, surrendered, and rendered safe. The event will take place on Saturday, December 13, 2014 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Plummer Park, located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard — enter the park at Fountain Avenue and Vista Street (at the north end of the Park). A total of $15,000 dollars’ worth of gift cards will be available at the event while supplies last. People should transport unloaded weapons in the trunk of their vehicle to the collection center. Deputy personnel and authorized volunteers will be available for members of the community to safely surrender any firearm. Following the exchange, the participant will be presented with a gift card.
