Out of the Shadows

In honor of West Hollywood’s 25th Anniversary, Outfest is proud to present a series of films that focus on the City’s history and celebrate the community as a vital contributor to the arts. Funded in part by a grant from the City of West Hollywood Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission. Legacy Project 5th Anniversary Series, in collaboration with ONE Institute/The International Gay and Lesbian Archives. The groundbreaking documentary OUT OF THE SHADOWS was produced by local affiliate KNBC as an expose on the (then shocking) lives of gays, lesbians and transgender people living in Los Angeles in 1970. At times cringe-worthy (note the casual use of the word "scum"), OUT OF THE SHADOWS is nevertheless a fascinating and thoroughly entertaining early portrait of queer life in Los Angeles. SIGN OF PROTEST focuses on protests surrounding a homophobic sign that hung for many years in Barney's Beanery, a West Hollywood landmark, before being removed for the last time in the 1980s. Special thanks to NBC News Archives, the UCLA Film & Television Archive and Pat Rocco. Admission is free.
