Bike to Work Day

City of West Hollywood to Sponsor a Festive “Weho Bike Hub” for Cyclists with Coffee, Snacks and Giveaways

May is National Bike Month, and West Hollywood is celebrating the benefits of healthy and eco-smart human-powered transportation with Bike To Work Day on Thursday, May 16, 2013. Throughout that morning, the City of West Hollywood is sponsoring a “Weho Bike Hub” from 7 a.m. until 11 a.m. at 8743 Santa Monica Boulevard, just east of Hancock Avenue as a place for cyclists to stop for coffee, snacks and bike safety giveaways.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, the share of Americans commuting by bike has grown by 47 percent since 2000. And there are many great reasons to choose bicycling as a form of transportation: it’s more affordable than driving a car, it burns calories, it releases endorphins, and bicycling helps reduce greenhouse gases and pollutants.

On Bike To Work Day, the Weho Bike Hub will be a festive destination for cyclists to gather throughout the morning. In addition to being a place to rehydrate and refuel on the way to work, the Weho Bike Hub will feature:

  • Bike valet parking, a slideshow, music and seating around a pop-up parklet
  • A chance to meet staff from the City of West Hollywood, members of the West Hollywood Bicycle Coalition, AIDS/LifeCycle and Bikes & Hikes.
  • A pop-up bike repair and tune-up station with a “cook” from the Bicycle Kitchen, a non-profit bicycle repair educational organization
  • A raffle for prizes including a Bicycle Tour Birthday Party, donated by Bikes & Hikes and helmets donated by I.Martin
  • A chance to learn more about the City’s upcoming Pedestrian and Bicycle Mobility Plan Update

In addition to the City of West Hollywood, sponsors for the Weho Bike Hub include Metro, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Trader Joe’s, Bikes & Hikes, I.Martin, the West Hollywood Bicycle Coalition, the LA Bicycle Kitchen, and AIDS/LifeCycle.
