Professor Paul Apodaca will present a program in which he will screen and analyze portions of “In The Land of the Headhunters,” a film by Edward S. Curtis. This program is being sponsored by the American Indian Resource Center of the Huntington Park Library. Edward S. Curtis made a pioneering attempt at motion picture production with the 1914 film "In The Land of the Headhunters," which predates Flaherty's "Nanook of the North" by two years. The program will be presented by Professor Paul Apodaca, Chapman University, who is also an Adjunct with the UCLA American Indian Studies program. He participated in the analysis of a new restoration of “In The Land of the Headhunters” and has visited with family members of the native people who appeared in Curtis' 1914 effort. He will share some of his insights into the film, its restoration, and the role of Curtis in the creation of images of American Indians in the popular imagination. Admission is free. Parking validation will be provided. For more information, please call (310) 652-5340. TTY for the deaf and hard of hearing at (323) 848-6496.
