Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), which is ordinarily observed in the Spring, commemorates the approximately six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust at the hands of Nazis and their collaborators. This year's rescheduled date has special significance. On September 29th and 30th, 1941, one of the best-documented massacres of the Nazi campaign in the Soviet Union unfolded. Approximately 33,711 Jews were murdered in the Babi Yar Ravine in Kiyev, Ukraine.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this year's delayed observance of Holocaust Remembrance Day in West Hollywood will take place virtually on Tuesday, September 29th, 2020. The City will host a Zoom program with special guests beginning at 12 PM. The virtual event will feature a conversation with Holocaust survivor Dr. Berci. Filmmaker Matthew Mishory, a West Hollywood resident, will take audience questions about his documentary Absent (watch the trailer) in a Q&A moderated by Israeli journalist Tal Kra-Oz. Musical performers include pianist, Diana Volman, and violinist, Dmitry Olevsky.

Absent is a cinematic portrait of the once-Jewish village of Mărculeşti (in present-day Moldova), its current inhabitants, and their very complex relationship to their own Holocaust history. The film is available now for free to event attendees. Please watch the film prior to the event and bring your questions to the Q&A. RSVP is required to attend.
