Commercial photographer George Simian offers a hands-on workshop on using your camera’s flash outdoors to make better portraits. The key technique is balancing the flash with the ambient light, and understanding the limitations of your flash’s power. Best practices for successful outdoor portraiture with flash will be demonstrated; the relationship of flash to the camera’s shutter and aperture will be explained, providing a clear idea of the practical limitations on where it’s useful. The workshop will then proceed outside for photography, then resume indoors for analysis and discussion of what worked (and what didn’t). Participants are welcome to experiment using their cameras/phone cameras.
