Pioneering trans artist Alexis Del Lago returns to the cabaret stage in Yesterday and Today, an autobiographical show debuting July 7th and 8th, 2017 at the Gardenia Restaurant in West Hollywood.
A discursive journey told through stories, songs, and anecdotes, it chronicles her artistic and personal adventures in New York, Berlin, Tangiers and beyond.Beginning with her youth in 1940s Puerto Rico, Del Lago recounts her coming-of-age in 1950s New York, world travels with long-time companion “Pinky”, collaborations with celebrated artists in Downtown New York and later life in Hollywood.
A talented young designer, young Alexis arrives in 1950s New York to study. She falls in with an older gentleman, “Pinky” who becomes like a father figure and supporter for decades. They live a high life and travel the world. In the ‘60s Alexis falls in with the Downtown art andperformance crowd appearing in such seminal works as Charles Ludlam’s When Queens Collide, Jackie Curtis’s Amerika Cleopatra and Jack Smith’s Flaming Creatures.
Part of a crowd of trans superstars - Candy Darling, Holly Woodlawn and International Chrysis - she makes a new life as a cabaret star, even opening for Bette Midler at the Continental Baths.
Del Lago will regale the audience with these stories and more in her grand, Hollywood style. Interspersed throughout will be illustrative songs, many from the Marlene Dietrich songbook, performed in her singular style. Director Adam Dugas will not only shepherd the theatrical presentation but accompany Del Lago on stage acting as an interviewer and sidekick. Produced by Zachary Drucker and Adam Dugas.
This program is presented with the support of the City of West Hollywood’s WeHo Arts through a Trans Arts Initiative Grant. For more information, please visit www.weho.org/arts or follow via social media @WeHoArts.
