WeHo Arts: Outfest Film Series - I Shall Not Be Removed: The Life of Marlon Riggs

  • Date: February 01, 2017 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM
  • Location: West Hollywood Park Public Meeting Room/City Council Chambers
    625 N. San Vicente Boulevard

Outfest West Hollywood celebrates Black History Month by honoring the 60th birthday of Marlon Riggs (b.February 3, 1957; d. April 5, 1994). In the heartfelt documentary I SHALL NOT BE REMOVED, director Karen Everett examines and celebrates Riggs' life and work. Best known for the poignant and provocative TONGUES UNTIED, the Texas-born Riggs was an early practitioner of what we now call "intersectionality," with his black and queer identities expressing themselves equally in his work as a filmmaker, poet and activist.

Gil Robertson, president of the African American Film Critics Association, will moderate a post-screening panel that will discuss the ongoing legacy of Riggs's work and life, and the impact that his documentaries have had on subsequent generations of LGBT artists and activists of color. Outfest presents this monthly screening series with the support of the City of West Hollywood through WeHo Arts (www.weho.org/arts).  To reserve tickets visit https://outfest.secure.force.com/ticket.
