Christopher Isherwood (1904–1986) was a novelist, playwright, screenwriter, autobiographer, and diarist, who authored such works as The Berlin Diaries and Christopher and His Kind. Isherwood’s masterpiece, A Single Man, set in Southern California and published 50 years ago, is among the first and most influential literary novels about a gay man. Written for gay and straight readers alike, the novel was brilliantly adapted as a film in 2007 by director Tom Ford. Don Bachardy (b. 1934) has spent nearly 60 years drawing and painting portraits of major creative, cultural, and political figures. Hollywood, a selection of Bachardy’s portraits of film legends, including stars, screenwriters, and directors, has received international recognition. Isherwood and Bachardy were famous for their eclectic circle of friends, which included an array of artists and intellectuals, such as Aldous Huxley, Truman Capote, Dodie Smith, among others.

In November, for the first time in a decade, the Huntington Library is convening scholars from around the world to present new research on the life and writings of Isherwood. A two-day conference on Friday, November 13, 2015 and on Saturday, November 14, 2015 will focus on Isherwood’s California years. For additional details, please visit www.huntington.org.

The Christopher Isherwood Foundation is planning a number of events in the Los Angeles area to celebrate the lives and artistic achievements of Isherwood and Bachardy. On Saturday, November 14, 2015, the Foundation will present “An Evening With Chris and Don” at the Writers’ Boot Camp at Bergamot Station in the City of Santa Monica. The screening of the documentary film, Chris and Don: A Love Story is co-sponsored by the City of West Hollywood and is organized by the Christopher Isherwood Foundation, which aims to preserve the creative legacy of the Anglo-American writer Christopher Isherwood and the American painter Don Bachardy by keeping their work available to the public in published and unpublished form and by promoting through any appropriate means the enjoyment and study of their work and the unique way of life which allowed them to produce it.
