On Staging LGBT Oral History: Laramie, Brokeback, & ‘8’

An Out West Lecture & Workshop

Event sponsored by the City of West Hollywood through its Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission and presented by Gregory Hinton. Documentary plays such as The Laramie Project, Beyond Brokeback and most recently, ‘8’ demonstrate that staging public testimony is an effective, efficient, and dramatic way to tell a story and preserve LGBT oral history. After the Missoula City Council declared April 12, 2010, Diversity Day, six hours of powerful public testimony was heard on a proposed amendment to add sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression to the city’s existing antidiscrimination ordinance – the first in Montana state history. Adapted by Out West curator Gregory Hinton, from the actual Missoula City Council Journal of Proceedings, this educational and evocative 90 minute overview and workshop – with audience participation - offers a rare glimpse into the day-to-day lives of Montana’s proud LGBT community and provides an important lesson on civil discourse. Admission is free. Street parking available at the West Hollywood Park 5-story Parking Garage. For more information, please call (323) 876-9585. TTY for the deaf and hard of hearing at (323) 848-6496.
