Transgender Day of Remembrance

The Transgender Day of Remembrance is observed each year to memorialize transgender individuals from Los Angeles and Southern California who have been murdered simply for the fact they were transgender individuals. These community members lost their lives because of the ongoing anti-transgender bias, hate, and prejudice that are so often present in our communities. The Transgender Day of Remembrance is observed each November to honor Rita Hester, whose brutal murder in 1988 so affected the transgender community that the “Remembering Our Dead” project was created. The following year in 1989, the City of San Francisco held a candlelight march and vigil honoring transgender individuals who had been murdered because of transphobia. Annual observances are hosted in dozens of cities around the world including West Hollywood. Admission is free. Refreshments will be served. For more information, please call (323) 848-6371. TTY for the deaf and hard of hearing at (323) 848-6496.
