Event Title: Welcome for All: Supporting LGBTQ Refugees at Home and Abroad

Date: Tuesday, June 22

Time: 11:00am

Location: Zoom Webinar. Registration is required at https://www.hias.org/events/welcome-all-supporting-lgbtq-refugees-home-and-abroad

Event Description

Even as we celebrate hard-fought wins for LGBTQ rights here in the U.S., countless refugees and asylum seekers continue to flee their homes to escape persecution on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.

In recognition of World Refugee Day, join HIAS and the City of West Hollywood to discuss the unique needs and vulnerabilities of this population and how HIAS and our partners have stepped up to advocate for their human rights and provide lifesaving support. Learn how we can work to help LGBTQ refugees and asylum seekers around the globe and right here at home.

Speakers include:

  • Sepi Shyne, Councilmember
  • Rachel Levitan, VP of International Programs at HIAS
  • Andy Ruiz, The TransLatin@ Coalition Staff Attorney
  • Joe Goldman, Community Engagement Director, Western Region at HIAS
  • John Erickson, Councilmember (moderator)

HIAS is a nonprofit organization that provides vital services to refugees and asylum seekers around the world and advocates for their fundamental rights so they can rebuild their lives. HIAS works to protect refugees who have been forced to flee their homelands because of who they are, including ethnic, religious, and sexual minorities.
